Twitter is exploding with #Ferguson, and I just can't cope.

Silence is not an option, but I … don't want to watch in real-time...

Ethics and Power in the Long War

This is a transcript of dymaxion's speech (complete with a few interesting typos); I'm hoping a recording of it gets posted.... She is clear about a lot of her basic assumptions, pulls together information from a lot of places, and makes the point that there is now just too much at stake for anybody in tech to claim to be apolitical. And she does that very well.

She also sets a high bar... pushed me out of my comfort zone more than once. But I'm up for that, I need that.

Because f*c*book (among others) enables tools for stalkers...

Of course, f*c*book isn't the real problem (as if there's only one "real" problem). Not having control over my data is a problem (have you put your name in spokeo?); rape culture is a problem. Kyriarchy is a problem....

There's this little thing called the Overton Window. (A bit of theory, and application in the real world...)

We can play that game, too... What sorts of "outrageous" things you can think of?

We're making headway on gay marriage, how about a legal framework for poly relationships?

A rational drug policy?

I had reasonable sex-ed in high school, but I think we can do better than demonstrating condoms on bananas...

Ooooh, education. Good education. For everybody. For free. And the same for health insurance.

I'm tired, what am I missing?

(I'd like to see cities spend more on libraries than on police... campaign finance reform goes without saying, and none of that "corporate personhood" shit, either.)

Damn.

I never did read Handmaid's Tale, and I probably should (I think I even have a copy).

Meanwhile, there's this: ILU-486.
Looking at the Stamp Act... There are some parallels, but I don't know how well this sort of thing is going to play out against ACTA (short form: SOPA/PIPA have a bigger, nastier counterpart - the battle against surveillance and censorship is just beginning).

And notsomuch: addendum to the anti-kyriarchy rant: apparently, Rand Paul was detained by the TSA for refusing screening as "too invasive." While on his way to an anti-choice rally. *spits*

Oh, it's definitely time for cat, book, and possibly strong drink.

A little while back, it came to light that one of the authors of SOPA was a copyright violator; now a co-sponsor of a bill requiring that public assistance recipients be tested for drug abuse has been arrested and charged with DUI.

I'm not perfect. I make mistakes... but I do my best to not be a fucking hypocrite.

I am so tired of the do as I say, not as I do mentality.

I am so tired of the two(+)-tiered system of justice: one set of rules for white men, one set of rules if you can afford a hotshit lawyer, "what rules?" if we're talking about a corporation or a government official.

Explain to me, in detail, when and why egalitarianism should be abandoned? Why the hell should rules I'm supposed to obey NOT apply to some Other? (I *will* grant that allowing firetrucks and ambulances and squadcars to ignore traffic lights and speed limits contributes to the general public good. Please argue other contraventions by case...)
