There's this little thing called the Overton Window. (A bit of theory, and application in the real world...)

We can play that game, too... What sorts of "outrageous" things you can think of?

We're making headway on gay marriage, how about a legal framework for poly relationships?

A rational drug policy?

I had reasonable sex-ed in high school, but I think we can do better than demonstrating condoms on bananas...

Ooooh, education. Good education. For everybody. For free. And the same for health insurance.

I'm tired, what am I missing?

(I'd like to see cities spend more on libraries than on police... campaign finance reform goes without saying, and none of that "corporate personhood" shit, either.)

(Good Education!*-- *YES!*
At the Very least, spend more on education than jails--(to go with libraries-than-cops)

*Starting in Grade school*
Marshal arts (pick one,or more)
Everyone needs self defense (and discipline)

Massage (and other healing stuff)
Everyone needs touching,(*) and to learn how to do that---*before* the whole hormone thing makes it way too complex.

Bring back hands-on things, (sewing, carpentry, gardening, cooking, Caring for Animals) Let them be Optional, kids deserve choice---but these days often they do not have the choice to try them out...(and no place in the home to even watch them.)

(*) I Know there is 'bad touch' but I think the solution is NOT the current one of "no touch at all"

Ideally kids get touched that much at home, beginning as infants--
but starting Somewhere would be good.
Other apes might be role models..

I had already seen the George Lakoff piece you link to as a real-world application of the Overton Window, and my main thought about it was a different angle:

The Republicans have got some damned good memetic engineers working for them. It's not just that they keep pushing these downright Medieval, reactionary ideas (which then slowly move toward the center of national discourse), it's also that they have really good tag-lines and -phrases for these ideas. They keep coming up with words and phrases that everyone wants to repeat.

Why can't we get some progressive meme designers to come up with similarly sticky concepts?
