* Think of the small amount of money Republican politicians are proud of saving by cutting over night weather monitoring and forcing out the person in charge of coordinating disaster related communications. For them the deaths of all these people, many of them children, are minor sacrifices compared to the pleasure Trump and Musk got from firing people significantly more competent than themselves and the tax cuts for a handful of billionaires this carnage is in aid of.

They are planning to cut even more and completely dissolve all federal Disaster response, because NOAA's ability to monitor and predict disasters helps quantify the climate crisis, which is bad for Republican donors, and Trump cares about no one but himself.

Republicans do not care how much damage to the country that they do or how many of their own voters they murder as long as they get money and power.

* I am doing my best to adjust to spending most of my time in a 5' by 5' space. The cats are adjusting to the new routines. Livia's worked out the invaders only come when I wear clothes, which means for the long weekend, she only hides for a couple of hours during the lungs/food/chores portion and comes out again when I settle for the afternoon. They take turns sitting on me for loves while I read Bad Gays, which is turning out to be fascinating. I've been really enjoying all the ways Queer Studies scholarship is expanding and the intersectionality of research just generally like in the one I read about policing bodies in San Fransisco. There are so many documents available now that there was no or only limited access to back in the day.

They've been mostly hanging out with me in my desk/sofa space, which is kind of them. They still spend time in the window spots, watching birds and butterflies. I periodically find Livia standing sadly in front of her bedroom door, which I can't open for her for safety reasons. Mostly though, we hang out in a group.

It will be rough when hurry up and waits starts again Monday.

I am bruising myself less trying to sleep, but today I fell twice because there is only so much I can do to protect my joints in these conditions. The mystery rash I had for the two weeks of them forcing us to move my whole room contents is mostly gone and I am finding fewer mystery sores. Likely I was allergic to something in the dust all that kicked up. I am still having trouble with my sinuses because I can't filter the common area properly. There are too many gaps in the window around the air conditioner and I have to move the big ass air filter twice a day to service my fish tanks and it's heavy and adding extra bending and plugging and unplugging is just too many things. Really I need new filters, but that chance has flown for the summer given our finances.

I have instituted a new litter change routine as I now have no one to do it. I am bad at bending and worse at breathing while bending and litter dust is being kicked up, but it can't be helped. Squirrel has taken over trash. I wasn't us to moving lots of heavy things, which would be needed for the next making things more livable in the debris maze steps, so I've been working on reorganizing some things in the garden, which needed doing. I think I've got things squared away for the month. *digits cruciform* (Obviously there will be weeding. There will always be weeding).

* I've just been drowning here. The exhaustion is intense and I'm in week two of a bunch of my left side joints randomly dislocating or trying to dislocate. Usually in situations where I just had to keep hobbling regardless. I keep trying to adjust what little propping I can do, but I really, really can't protect my joints when I sleep without a proper bed.

I can actually feel my natural shoulder joint deteriorating under the stress and my artificial one is backsliding. I can't really manage much physio either given the givens. Most of it's physically impossible in the space I have, and what is possible is hampered by pain, exhaustion, and all the fucking extra physical labour i have to do to deal with HOA Construction Hell.

I still need to move a heavy thing back and forth twice a day for the benefit of the fish tanks, and I'm trying to do at least one other extra thing everyday on top of the usual stuff needing doing.

Monday it was so bad I couldn't raise my arms above my chest. There was nothing for it but to take a muscle relaxant for the benefit of my shoulders and neck, which is dangerous (see can't prop my joints in safe positions when I sleep in a 2' by 5' space). I took it early, in hopes that it would be mostly worn off by bedtime. Another downside is my body thinks even a half dose is a sleeping pill which carries it's own problems. I still hurt myself in my sleep, but the balance ended up in my favor.

So this meant I started Tuesday exhausted and behind with joints that kept trying and occasionally succeeded in popping in and out.

I didn't even manage all the basics Tuesday RL or online.

Wednesday, I heard them working above me, so I was pretty sure they'd turn up here Tuesday morning to squeeze me in, based on the pattern previously set. Job took all morning and I am pretty sure they are sneaking in one disabled person a day outside the HOAs demands they go systematically and fuck the disabled residents.

I'm not kidding when I say the construction workers have been incredibly kind and considerate from their head office to the teens that are just learning what to do.

I forgot to check my email, which I feel bad about as a Millennial had rearranged their schedule to cove my Thursday morning doctor's appointment. I panicked and moved it to September, which is not a bad thing really as we were going to talk next step on my joints and the next round of that is going to be strenuous and I haven't any spoons or time for that now.

It turns out Squirrel traded a shift so they can Construction sit while I do the rather more urgent dentist appointment scheduled three months ago for two weeks from now.

I spent Wednesday just trying to catch up on some of the things I couldn't manage Monday or Tuesday and honestly, mostly failing.

Thursday morning a whole crew showed up 9ish to work in my room until 11:30ish.

They replaced a lot of pipe in the ceiling and expanded the network of it. They put in some drywall. the whole thing looks wild as the assembly is sticking right out of the ceiling.

Next is another code inspection (Yay, up to code fire, water, and electrical things!). They think Friday or Monday, but can't promise as it's third party. After the nice fire system specialist comes by to do "Bio-safe caulking." Again, all for "Biosafe" and no leaks on my bed.

Then they build a box around the new sticky outie stuff, which is a two day process because stuff needs to dry.

The nice young man in charge of today actually apologized for things taking so long. I made clear I knew none of this was their fault and of course we need inspections. Seriously A++ on kindness and communication from Construction folks. **This is me glaring hard at Apartment management who earned their F**

He also let me know I was safe for the day, so I slipped out to the grocery store with things like safe for me salsa, and hit the produce place with the irregular hours that is near it. Like the Market garden down the street from me, they work with local farms, orchards, and nurseries. Their produce is better than any grocery store and fresher, but not as good as the Market Garden which is more expensive, but also has by far the best produce and town. Irregular produce place is run by semi-retired people, which is why hours are now short and less convenient compared to when they were full time. They also still take EBT and because they draw from larger small farms over a larger area, they had white nectarines, which no one else has just now. Market garden mostly draws from micro-farms and the like and if it's not in season or the crop is bad SOL. I haven't found white nectarine anywhere else yet this season, so I got two as a little treat.

I had time to put groceries away before City Guy and Honest City Contractor turned up for final paper signing on the City renovation. I explained construction Hell. They are planning to start late July/early August. I suggested they start with kitchen and bathrooms first and encourage the electrician to schedule us further out because I have no way to predict when I will have access to the walls of the living room.

Them: Are you sure you can manage this.

Me: We will manage somehow.

I am already trying to work out how much I can sneak back into the piles against my bedroom closet without breaking bed parts and what can be sacrificed access wise in an absolute emergency. There is so damned little leeway here. I am pretty sure I can't sleep in my bathtub. How many days can I go unwashed in high summer without clawing at my scalp and skin? If I deconstruct the debris maze and put it back with zero space sofa side, I won't be able to change the sofa if Tavy has an accident and will only be able to get in and out climbing over the arm. How many days can I do that without hurting myself and/or ruining the sofa?

Let us hope the nice people doing HOA Construction Hell are fast. Let us hope this all doesn't get any worse.

Livia didn't come out of hiding in her special secure hide until after four. (The secure hide is a multilevel hide with comfy sleeping spots under my desk. No one can see her and it is nicer than the debris maze if you are spending 7ish hours in there and don't happen to need a litter box. There are even toys to play with quietly in there and you can peer out the upper level without being seen). Livia saw me get dressed before eight and suspected Invaders were coming, clever girl.

Tavy was fascinated by the construction people going in and out of his room and the odd sounds in there, but the big loud power tool sounds were too much and he hid in the debris maze every time.

Because I knew they weren't coming back, I could bathe, which I very much needed after being out in the heat, but to do that, I needed to wash the bit of plastic shelving I scavenged... whatever day it was I went on the lap top repair quest. I don't scavenge soft furnishings for obvious reasons, but this is easily washable plastic, and I need replacement shelving for my towels. I am not 100% sure this will work, but I have hopes and it was normal outdoor furniture dirty, not suspicious dirty. Took it apart, went at it with a scrubby and dish soap. I'll reassemble it another day and duct tape the damaged bit.

* This morning I was inspected twice and caulked once. **waggle Brows**

They were also prebuilding structure for the thing that will stick out of my ceiling in the hall this morning.

This afternoon I heard power tools in the room above mine. I shall be on the look out Monday morning in hopes.

The next bit is two different days as they need things to dry in between.

We'll also need to repaint the ceiling in that area.

I want my room back so bad.

Putting it all back together is a massive fucking project, but just being able to really sleep... oh the luxury of it.

UPDATE: I just got an email that inspection and fire caulking for my floor and the one above are Delayed for Two Weeks, stretching the project out to end of August for my floor.

My suspicion that they’ve been slipping me and the even more disabled people above me in with the upper floor people to speed us us confirmed.

Wow, did we just dodge a bullet!

Thank you Construction people!!!

* There is nothing like a periodic rereading of the Iliad to remind me just how much I hate the Gods and Goddesses. No, I don't hate them being in the narrative. It annoys me that they often get yanked out of the narrative or brushed aside in how people look at the Iliad because they are very much part of the point and woven deep into the plot and themes. What I mean it the fundamental arbitrariness of their behavior, their playing favorites, their breaking of their own rules causes so much misery and death and destruction. It's important and it parallels a lot of the same behavior in the human characters. It needs to be there.

The war itself is made because of decisions made by men and Deities. Both men and Deities make terrible decisions that prolong the war and end up harming their own sides. Both men and Deities fuck around and find out, but it's usually people who had little to no say who end up getting the worst consequences. Heroes cheat; Gods cheat. People die and die.

I can have no idea what the early audiences thought when they heard the oral formulaic versions. I can't know what the early audiences of the written version thought. I can't even know what classical audiences thought of oral or written versions. I have seen so much art made both from our text and other written and oral formulaic versions. I've spent decades thinking about the text we have in all it's richness and complexity and the complicated ways playwrights and philosophers portrayed both the human and demi god characters on one side and the gods on the other. I've wrote and thought and talked so much over the years about the human characters and the ways they illuminate and interrogate fault lines in ancient culture and the human heart.

I don't write much about the Greek Gods in the Iliad, though. Still I think about them, oh, do I think about them.

domeWelcome back to Frugal Friday! This is a weekly forum post to encourage people to share tips on saving money, especially but not only by doing stuff yourself. A new post will be going up every Friday, and will remain active until the next one goes up. Contributions will be moderated, of course, and I have some simple rules to offer, which may change further as we proceed.

Rule #1:  this is a place for polite, friendly conversations about how to save money in difficult times. It's not a place to post news, views, rants, or emotional outbursts about the reasons why the times are difficult and saving money is necessary. Nor is it a place to use a money saving tip to smuggle in news, views, etc.  I have a delete button and I'm not afraid to use it.

Rule #2:  this is not a place for you to sell goods or services, period. Here again, I have a delete button and I'm not afraid to use it.

Rule #3:  please give your tip a heading that explains briefly what it's about.  Homemade Chicken Soup, Garden Containers, Cheap Attic Insulation, and Vinegar Cleans Windows are good examples of headings. That way people can find the things that are relevant for them. If you don't put a heading on your tip it will be deleted.

Rule #4: don't post anything that would amount to advocating criminal activity. Any such suggestions will not be put through.

With that said, have at it!

The last couple of posts I’ve made with images didn’t have their alt text make it to the Federation. It made it to Dreamwidth, but didn’t federate.

Let’s try this one:

A highly complicated cluster of street names on bike infrastructure and/or high-bike-use streets in east Seattle around Madrona. Is this alt-text visible to the Fediverse?

Another successful ride on Firefly with my friend Kim riding Raja.  I was a little worried, the wind was blowing, coastal fog (rare this time of year) had cooled things off, and Firefly was objecting to everything from being groomed (normally she loves this) to having the bridle put on.  I walked for the first 1/2 mile of our "ride" because it was all downhill. Downhill invites faster speed and that isn't what I wanted.  Uphills usually follow downhills, so I mounted up and we went up for the next most of a mile, which calmed things down a lot.  She was never "bad" just a little snorty at first.  We worked on confidence, she did great, and only once needed Raja to take the lead and show her that the scary downhill with an eroded trail was perfectly safe.  We also worked on refining our cues.  The times that I have to use big gestures and insist on where I want to go are getting fewer and the times I can give a tiny squeeze of leg, or tightening of my fingers are getting more frequent.  At one point I leaned over a little, grabbed a gate and pushed it open a little further. It took some pressure to push, and I could see Firefly thinking hard about what was going on, but she stood perfectly still.  Oh, and we picked up trail ribbons from April's event. Firefly only once looked scared of the ribbon, and that was a big 3 color one with 18" streamers.  Like usual she thought about it, sniffed it and relaxed. If I can ride, at least a little, three or four times a week, we will make really fast progress.  Sorry, snuck out before M took any pics, but here is one of Firefly today being very, very serious about eating her evening meal.

P.S.  Yes, she has changed colors again.   In my last post, on June 19th, she was dark grey.

After spending so much time on the floor for my back, I made a decision: it was time to get a gardener. Simple, right? However, finding someone to do any sort of work here is an exercise in frustration. It took time and a couple of false starts, but someone else is weed-whacking the road this year. I'm still doing a lot of the weeding and pruning, which is much easier work on cranky back.

Tomorrow is my last day of weeding for a week. We're running the bar at the local volunteer fire department's barbeque this weekend, which translates to moving both commercial and homebrew kegs around. While the WBH is puzzling together his various lines to the kegs and CO2 bottles, I get to move umpteen boxes of beer glasses and wine cups from the container to where we serve. After set-up, it'll be beer, beer, cider, and more beer for five hours. I'd much rather pour beer than deal with people. Our locals are nice, but I can only handle so much dithering and enforced chitchat.

Media consumption: the newest Longmire (gets a strong B grade) and Squid Games (gets a C-, mostly for the final episode).

Elon Musk’s Grok going full-Nazi

Grok went gone full Hitler-supporting Nazi today. At first it was slightly hidden, but since I boosted this around, it’s just gone full-bore literal Nazi, calling for National Socialism and talking about what Hitler would do and why it would be good.

I don’t have time to write a long version of this, much less edit it to a good short version of this, so I’m just gonna dump my thesis:

I don’t think anyone changed Grok’s startup prompt.

I think they shifted weightings on sources until it started agreeing with Elon about all the shit he was mad at it about, and that meant…

…full-bore Nazi time.

Unintentionally.

But inevitably, since he’s literally a fucking fascist who literally threw a Hitler Rally-identical Nazi salute at the fucking inauguration.

Think about this, think about that, and think about who Elon is.

Today is a very good day to protest at a Tesla dealership. Find a protest near you. Get out, show up, do shit.

And it’s always a very good day to leave X behind forever.

Careless People

My hold at the library came up, so I finally got to read Careless People, Sarah Wynn-Williams’s memoir about her time at Facebook.

You should read it.

No matter how bad you might think Facebook/Meta and its leadership might be, it’s almost certainly worse. Even if you know all of the pieces – all of the events discussed in the book were covered by the press in various forms before her memoir dropped – her presentation really pulls it all together.

Wynn-Williams doesn’t come off real great either herself, mind you. Early on, I found myself reacting with combinations of “…how did you expect this to play out?” and “this is both psychotically abusive and incredibly compromising, you should’ve walked. I literally would’ve walked out right here, and I know, ’cause I’ve done it.” (Tho’ to be fair, there have been a couple of times when I didn’t. But mostly, I have.) The recountings alternated between funny and hard to read, but in a way most people would mostly find funny – I think.

That was before it actually got to any of the worst parts, though, the parts where it went from a combination of entertainingly naive, occasionally pathetic, and often appalling to frankly revolting and rather deeply grim but still compelling as the… honestly, as the evil… crystallised.

But, well.

No matter how badly Wynn-Williams might come across in this memoir, Facebook comes off much, much worse.

So much worse.

So you should read it. No one other than Meta have contested the contents. Even they refer to the contents as “out of date” and “previously reported,” which worlds away from “lies” – although they do insist some of her accusations of behaviour by upper-level executives are “false.”

That’s probably about the sexual harassment, but I think we all know better.

More, Zuckerberg tried very hard to silence her and stop the book’s publication. He did manage to stop her – via binding arbitration – from promoting her work. That includes stating “orally, in writing, or otherwise any disparaging, critical or otherwise detrimental comments to any person or entity concerning [Meta], its officers, directors, or employees.”

The book came out anyway, because the publisher was in the UK, and said they didn’t care what an American arbitrator had to say.

And that’s one of the reasons you should read it.

Because if you think there is anything redeemable within Meta… based on the uncontested facts of this book… you are wrong.

This week and last I have been missing the early bus by 30 seconds or less - I am up the street from the bus stop as it pulls away. Most of those times I might have made it had I jogged quickly or dashed, but I have not wanted to.

This morning I made a specific effort to get up 5 minutes early. I made sure I would get out the door a couple minutes earlier. Aaaaand... the early bus was 5 minutes late.

deadly jabWe are now approaching the end of the fourth year of these open posts. When I first posted a tentative hypothesis on the course of the Covid phenomenon, I had no idea that discussion on the subject would still be necessary all these years later, much less that it would turn into so lively, complex, and troubling a conversation. Still, here we are. Crude death rates and other measures of collapsing public health are anomalously high in many countries, but nobody in authority wants to talk about the inadequately tested experimental Covid injections that are the most likely cause; public health authorities government shills for the pharmaceutical industry are still trying to push through laws that will allow them to force vaccinations on anyone they want; public trust in science is collapsing; and the story continues to unfold.

So it's time for another open post. The rules are the same as before:

1. If you plan on parroting the party line of the medical industry and its paid shills, please go away. This is a place for people to talk openly, honestly, and freely about their concerns that the party line in question is dangerously flawed and that actions being pushed by the medical industry and its government enablers are causing injury and death on a massive scale. It is not a place for you to dismiss those concerns. Anyone who wants to hear the official story and the arguments in favor of it can find those on hundreds of thousands of websites.

2. If you plan on insisting that the current situation is the result of a deliberate plot by some villainous group of people or other, please go away. There are tens of thousands of websites currently rehashing various conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 outbreak and the vaccines. This is not one of them. What we're exploring is the likelihood that what's going on is the product of the same arrogance, incompetence, and corruption that the medical industry and its wholly owned politicians have displayed so abundantly in recent decades. That possibility deserves a space of its own for discussion, and that's what we're doing here.

3. If you plan on using rent-a-troll derailing or disruption tactics, please go away. I'm quite familiar with the standard tactics used by troll farms to disrupt online forums, and am ready, willing, and able -- and in fact quite eager -- to ban people permanently for engaging in them here. Oh, and I also lurk on other Covid-19 vaccine skeptic blogs, so I'm likely to notice when the same posts are showing up on more than one venue.

4. If you plan on making off topic comments, please go away. This is an open post for discussion of the Covid epidemic, the vaccines, drugs, policies, and other measures that supposedly treat it, and other topics directly relevant to those things. It is not a place for general discussion of unrelated topics. Nor is it a place to ask for medical advice; giving such advice, unless you're a licensed health care provider, legally counts as practicing medicine without a license and is a crime in the US. Don't even go there.

5. If you don't believe in treating people with common courtesy, please go away. I have, and enforce, a strict courtesy policy on my blogs and online forums, and this is no exception. The sort of schoolyard bullying that takes place on so many other internet forums will get you deleted and banned here. Also, please don't drag in current quarrels about sex, race, religions, etc. No, I don't care if you disagree with that: my journal, my rules.

6. Please don't just post bare links without explanation. A sentence or two telling readers what's on the other side of the link is a reasonable courtesy, and if you don't include it, your attempted post will be deleted.

Please also note that nothing posted here should be construed as medical advice, which neither I nor the commentariat (excepting those who are licensed medical providers) are qualified to give. Please take your medical questions to the licensed professional provider of your choice.

With that said, the floor is open for discussion.

Hotter weather is on its way. We have been luxuriating in temperatures from the low 80's to the mid-90's for the past couple of months.  Sadly that is ending and a week of 100F + is coming up.  The hot day is forecast at 104F.  By last year's standards that is cool, last year this time it was running up to 117F.   Oh well, the cool was nice while it lasted, and it resulted in the tomato plants setting huge amounts of fruit.
100F +  means I have to get busy and finish up the shade cloth supports.  I --was-- finished with the main part of the garden.  But that didn't include the bed and tanks behind the main area, or the apple trees and it doesn't include side panels on the west side.
This morning I walked out and took a hard look at:  measurements, paths and how everything lines up.  Turns out I did a rotten job of advanced planning in half the garden. The shade cloth worked great on the raised beds, but I really needed different post spacing in order to extend it out.  This means;  undoing the wires holding up the overhead pipes; removing the shade cloth;  pulling out 7 posts and moving them over.  On the west side one more post and associated pipes, need to be added to each line.   Fortunately the ground is soft and  the moves are going well.  I've got 5 posts moved and the associated pipes and shade cloth back in place.  Two of the three new posts are in the ground.  Shouldn't take long to finish.
When I have finished extending that half the garden, the small tanks in the back of the other side of the garden need all new posts (4) and a couple of pipes.  Two of the small apple trees need shade as well or the fruit will sunburn.  Those should be easy as the trees are only about 5 feet tall.

Note: pruning apples in summer works amazingly well.  Summer pruning encourages fruit.  Winter pruning encourages growth, so I don't prune much, or at all in the winter.  My oldest apple tree, now in its fourth year, is absolutely dripping with apples.  After doing a bunch of reading: apples fruit on branches that are at lest 2 years old or older.  This year my 3 year old trees are starting to set a little fruit.  Next year there should be lots.

While I'm talking about fruit trees, the little fig that I planted this spring is doing well. There hasn't been much growth above ground, but I bet the root system is growing like crazy.  It has stopped wilting in the heat. I'm so happy that it has finally taken hold.  Way back in the winter of 2020/21 I took the first cuttings from the old trees near Split Rock.  The  trees are at least 100 years old and incredibly tough to have lasted with no care.  Those first cuttings failed completely, as did the ones from the next year.  But the cuttings from 22/23 rooted as did a couple from 23/24.  This is a baby from the first batch.

volume threeMidnight is upon us and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after that point will not get an answer, and in fact will not be put through.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 341,928th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.3 of The Magic Monday FAQ here

Also:
I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

The
image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week.  This is my eighty-third book, just coming off the presses as I write this, the third of the instructional volumes in the Golden Section fellowship and the sixth of seven volumes in the complete series -- the seventh, The Life Force Workbook, isn't finished yet. If you've read the first two books of occult training in this series, you know to expect a quirky but effective reworking of the system of occult training I learned from my teacher John Gilbert, with a focus on meditation and plenty of material to work on. Like the two previous volumes, this'll keep you busy for a year or so, and you'll finish up the process with a bumper crop of practices and insights you can use for your own personal quest for wisdom, revelation, and enlightenment. Interested?  You can get copies here if you're in the United States and here if you live elsewhere; I recommend the hardback if you're going to do the work, as you'll put plenty of hard wear into the volume.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.

With that said, have at it!

People die because most of the remaining rural hospitals will close as they need Medicaid money to survive. Slapping a temporary Bandaid on the funding bleed won't save them as the amount is minuscule compared to what they are losing.

They are sacrificing people for the billionaires that bought them.

They are stealing healthcare from 11.8 million in the near future about a third of them children.

3 Million people, 1 Million of them children, will lose food assistance.

They are making the bottom 10% of Americans 4% Poorer.

This is all so they can make the Wealthiest 10% 2.3% richer.

The goal of this legislation is to harm or kill as many ordinary people as possible while ballooning the deficit by 3.3 directly over the next decade by giving tax cuts to billionaires, but more likely 4.45 trillion if one considers things like interest. (Republicans have decided to no longer count the billionaire tax cuts and related interest costs because the real figures make them look bad. Lying that a 4 trillion increase is a $508 billion decrease is better for them politically).

A budget is a moral document. It says what a society's priorities are.

Not all deficit is bad. Deficit to invest in things like education or health or infrastructure is good for obvious reasons. This deficit is entirely about sucking money out of the economy and into billionaire bank accounts. It gives nothing back; it only harms.

* So Saturday, I wrapped up the aggregate, then started posting more links in the hour or so before bed.

Livia, who is really not doing well with all the disruption went on the lemon laptop instead of around it, as she normally would. sat on it about 30 seconds, then jostled it jumping over the back.

It black screened. I’ve tried everything. I can see the Lenovo logo on restart, but it just gives flash of the lockscreen before blacking out. Tech support hung up on me in the middle and went home on Sunday.

So far I’ve invested about eight hours trying to resuscitate it. Two friends have tried as well.

All the links, all the data are locked in there.

I still have the refurbished lap top, which is what I’m writing on now. I hadn’t the heart to try to start over, especially while rebooting Edward Laptop over and over, etc.. It’s harder to work on this one for a variety of reasons.

If Edward is really done, I will start again. On top of the not enough sleep. (I got four hours today as it seems the sofa cushion foam may be deteriorated to the point that the metal will grind my hip every time I try to sleep). On top of having to use all the spoons every day trying to cope with construction hell. On top of every other thing.

Restarting all the news set up things on this computer means I will be even slower on news, etc., likely for a few weeks. It takes a while to migrate functions and re-establish work flow. This computer is a little slower and also isn’t quite up to hosting modern waterfox, which means figuring out how to do things without.

This month has been an absolute nightmare.

* Monday: The fire inspector came along with the nice man who did the fire upgrade part at 10:30. They were gone at 10:37. The fire inspector praised the guy who did the installation, which made me happy. He had this warm, gentle vibe and a soft spoke competence that reminded me a lot of my beloved late Uncle, though they looked nothing alike.

After I ate, I started in with the phone. new Millennial was having trouble claiming their home care aide hours (They worked them, but the whole system is super glitchy). Today is the last day to fix it. New Millennial is getting most of my hours. we are going to try to hire someone to do the heavier lifting jobs once a week, like taking out the trash with the rest of the hours. Because of the employment change over, I needed to make sure the trouble wasn't to do with that. *digits cruciform it is sorted now*

Then it was back to trying to ave Edward Lap top. I and New Millennial and [profile] steampunktoy put in about nine hours total trying to save him Saturday and Sunday. I went back to try to trick tech support AI into letting me talk to a live human. Apparently the trick is just to say nonsense until it gives up. I got really good results reading to it from the Dracula Daily Tumblr feed which was weirdly way faster than just repeated things like live agent and advanced technical support and I refuse to do that. This took a few tries to get it right. I wasted one by foolishly cooperating and that just kicked it into sales mode. I got through and the phone cut out on our end during transfer to advanced technical support. Whee!

I fucking hate GenAI I do not like this outwit the sphinx aspect of everything nowadays. Oooo! I wonder if the tumblr trick works on Social Security chat bots! Let's hop I don't have to find out this year.

The third tech support guy walked me through some things, but odds are it's the same hardware problem from when Lenovo decided to enshitify. They wanted me to mil it back, which I don't know how to do and don't have the box for and the diagnostic is over a hundred and fuck that. I got him to suggest I take it to Best Buy.

So I guess I'm doing that in a car that now smokes if I take on the highway for repairs of an unknown amount.

It is still better than buying a new computer, I suspect.

Fuck! I got this new in January.

We can't afford this monetarily. I can't afford all these spoons. I got six hours of sleep today and four yesterday and I feel like I'm getting beaten with baseball bats in my "sleep" every night. I've started dreaming of scorpions which I just realized are likely symbolic reinterpretation of the damned sprinklers that are the reason they are doing this terrible thing to me and the cats. Like, every time I see the scorpion in my dream, I think: that is a weird pattern for a scorpion's collaboration, yet strangely familiar. It's the sprinkler head abstracted. It's kind of beautiful.

Tavy clings and claws and bites. Livia panics if she can't instantly see me. The tiny meeps of terror break my heart. I am literally just on the other side of the debris, but if that's not where she suspected, she makes those lost kitten sounds.

On the upside, the aggregate scaffold transferred fine. It usually does even without the fail safe of it being open somewhere else to check against, but now and then I end up with an empty page, so I held off opening it until I had no choice. I have no choice.

As I said in the Sunday entry, starting from scratch on news links on a different computer is a pain in the ass, and I'm a browser down, so I'm focusing on essential action item type things and the like right now.

I am so sorry. We have hit my too many things broken limit.

* UPDATE 3:44PM

Squirrel was able to take over Contractor watch so I went out into extreme heat and traffic to go to an in person repair.

It turned out to be a stupid easy fix. One they could have very easily talked me through at the official Lenovo technical support. One that only someone who knew about all the stupid ways enshittified Lenovos Black screen without warning would have known. Like someone at Lenovo tech support, one would think, but they were so fixated on making me reset or mail it back for hundreds of dollars of repair.

One none of us could have guessed, not even someone clever as Newest Millennial or [profile] steampunktoy.

Apparently enshittified Lenovos like to change their settings on their own to things no one would want so why is black screen even a setting, I must ask? Why? Why program a computer to black screen itself? WTF, Lenovo!

The car made it home. Let us hope it starts again.

I dropped off the half dead TV in the place that used to take them, but apparently just stopped. (It was on the way back from TV repair and needed doing. The lady took pity on my barely mobile and tempting heat stroke self with a car more than a decade older than her assistant, I'd guess, and took the TV anyway. "Just this once." I promised never again.

Let us hope the other ancient second hand tv lives a good long life as we can't throw them out either.

Everyone was so terribly kind.

* Wednesday: Not surprisingly, the pain was Extra. Still no contractors today. I did get a call from the citty program. My vote was today and the City is going ahead with the fixes.

I am fascinated to see how this works out with HOA Hell Project.

* Thursday: I slipped out while the contractors were at lunch for produce. I figured they likely wouldn't come today as I hadn't heard construction all week, and I wanted to slip out while the temperature was still reasonable and before the after work crowd came shopping for long weekend provisions. I was late getting back, as I zipped down to the library while i was out which meant I could hit discount grocery. This was a good call as yoghurt and mushrooms were on sale, and not just the normal mushrooms, but two kinds of fancier ones that i like for soup and pasta.

I hope it's all right.

It broke my heart a little when I took the pride flags down as this is likely the last time I'll get to have them up. They were so cheerful, you know. I am fighting the pride ban. Of course I am, but management is utterly unreasonable on all accounts.

Despite the heat, the pinwheels in my patio garden have been going gangbusters since yesterday. It is still and oven down town of course, but I live in a wind tunnel, that funnels the breeze out of Alaska, which helps some.

Monday and Tuesday the sky was uncanny valley empty again. I should be used to this as climate change has been doing this half a decade now.

Today though? Normal for July wispy clouds high up and headed off the Bay towards the mountains as it should be.
