I'm frustrated/angry/scared about the latest pronouncement from Trump… The man is an unrepentant fascist, and has an appalling amount of support. Fuck all the polls asking whether you'd go back in time and kill Baby Hitler - what are you going to do about the monster we have here and now?
Seriously - what would it take to illustrate the trainwreck in such a way that his support would evaporate overnight? Obviously, black-bag jobs are out - the last thing we need is a martyr. Simple comparisons to the Third Reich aren't going to do it (see appalling amount of support, although I wonder what would happen if somebody asked him how he felt about the Nuremberg Trials). I'm not sure he's capable of showing embarrassment in public - the bluster/attack reflexes are too keenly honed.
This feels like a cross between The Lathe of Heaven and The Screwfly Solution - it's a test, and we're failing quite thoroughly.

Date: 2015-12-11 05:55 am (UTC)Right now, none of the other Republican candidates can effectively call him out; he's just a somewhat more extreme, much more outspoken version of their politics. He's gunning for the Asshole Bigot vote, and yeah, those are vocal. Also: They talk to pollsters.
People of color often don't talk to pollsters. People who work two jobs don't talk to pollsters. College students don't talk to pollsters. And so on. "Dewey Defeats Truman" happened because the pollsters talked to people living in corner houses--not realizing that the income skew between "corner" and "middle of the block" was enough to shift voting preferences.
Trump's doing well because loud-mouthed bigots love him. And yeah, many of them will vote for him... but the last two elections prove that winning the rich white vote is not enough to win. (Winning the asshole bigot vote might be... except a lot of the rich white vote isn't willing to be that publicly aligned with the asshole bigots.)
I would love love love to see Trump and Bernie on a debate stage together--Bernie would shred him.
Hillary wouldn't do bad, but she'd keep looking to the moderators to ask is this real? Did you hear that? Can't you find someone who actually knows a damn thing about politics to put against me--I'm a big girl; you don't have to put me against Mr. Internet Hate Meme.
Bernie strikes me as someone who could take a bigot statement at face value and gently show how it both fails to follow Constitutional standards, and fails to increase US income.
The media's pushing Trump and the 10-candidate fiasco because they need to pretend this is something like a real race, as opposed to a fractured party that can't agree on anything other than religious tyranny, against two very experienced politicians with solid, viable plans to improve the standard of living for everyone.
(I want. I want someone to say to Carson, "As a [Pagan/ Muslim/ Buddhist/ atheist], why should I vote for you?" Nobody on the Repub side of things is going to address "why should I vote for the theocracy you want," which is a shame, 'cos I'd love to see all of them get asked that.)
